EC190: This practicum provides the learner with the opportunity for directed observations of children and educators in an early childhood setting as well as an introduction to a licensed childcare facility and its daily operations. It also allows for practice of planned Creative Art, Language and Literature, and Music and Movement activities for young children.

EC191: This practicum provides the learner with the opportunity for practical experience in working with young children in a licensed early childhood setting. Learners will be able to demonstrate their developing skills in interpersonal communications, planning, implementing and evaluating appropriate learning experiences/activities and strategies for guiding children’s behaviour with assistance.

EC192: This practicum provides the learner with the opportunity for practical field experience in working with young children in a licensed early childhood setting. It will offer the opportunity for the integration and consolidation of knowledge and skills gained throughout the program. Learners will be transferring a theoretical understanding of child development and the principles of early childhood education to their practical daily application in the field. Under the supervision of the sponsor, the learner will be involved in all aspects of providing care and education for young children.

The focus will be to acquire a basic understanding of creating a positive learning environment while planning and implementing socials and math activities for young children. This course will also examine the benefits of a socials and math program to all areas of a child’s development (social, physical, intellectual, creative, and emotional). Planning and implementing a wide range of stimulating and challenging play-based, hands-on activities and experiences will also be studied and accomplished during this investigative and exploratory course.

This course will provide learners with the current information about the regulatory framework within the operations of childcare services. The focus will be on governmental mandates and jurisdictions, current licensing and/or registration regulations and the organizational structure, authority and procedures of the provincial and local Community Care Facilities licensing. This course will also examine the history of early childhood education, the many theories and philosophies that have been developed and studied over the years and the Early Childhood Educators of B.C. Code of Ethics. The learners will also develop their own ECE philosophy, Policy and Procedures Manual, and Childcare Centre Design.
